One Punk Under God
Last winter I stumbled across the documentary series, "One Punk Under God," on the Sundance Channel. The six-part program chronicled a year in the ministry of Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye. I was mostly curious when I stopped channel surfing, but ended up engaged. This young North Carolina man has built a ministry a world away from that of his parents. He is intent on reaching out to those left behind by the church. He ministers to gay, street kids, homeless, drug addicts, transgenders, and outcasts. He touches the lives of those who feel like they've been left behind by God. His church, named Revolution, is held in bars and clubs. His word is powerful.Like the New Monastics profiled earlier this week, Revolution is reclaiming the Gospel in new and courageous ways. I'm just wondering where the girls are... if you know of any young women leading innovative ministries, please let us know.
Otherwise, stayed tuned: tomorrow my baby sister Aleena, a rising junior at a Christian college, will tell her what drew her to such a school.

It's really cool to hear about God using emotional disasters in people's lives for His glory.

I saw Jay speak at a youth ministry conference back in 2003, and this is a ministry that is going places! He's an incredible speaker, really putting a finger on the problems facing churches today. Pretty rebellious, he's going to be a major force that lots of people in the church at large will not like because he's open about things that are uncomfortable for us to talk about. I really enjoyed hearing him speak, it was very thought-provoking, even if you don't agree with him 100%.
