Special Churches: English Chapel

Our tour of special churches this week wraps up with a visit to English Chapel United Methodist Church nestled in the heart of Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina.

English Chapel was founded in 1860 by Rev. A.F. English who was a Methodist circuit rider. A family member purchased the land for $5, the timbers were donated and neighbors pitched in to raise the church. The chapel was used every Sunday and served as a schoolhouse and public meeting place during the week.

By 1939, the wooden building was falling down. It was replaced by a rock church built by the congregation. It is the chapel we find in the woods today.

While English Chapel is plain and simple in appearance, it is remarkable for its hospitality. It's located just off a Davidson River Campground and quite near many other prime camping spots in the National Forest. Therefore, all guests are welcome each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. -- campers, hikers, bikers and fishermen can come dressed in their outdoor clothes and will be welcomed with open arms.

So, if you ever find yourself in Pisgah National Forest, plan to stop by English Chapel. The congregation will embrace you for worship and coffee hour following the service. And if you do, be sure to drive a mile or two up the road to see one of God's beautiful creations: Looking Glass Falls (pictured below).
