Feminists

Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

When did being a feminist become shameful? A recent survey of American women found that only 29% consider themselves feminists. I was shocked... stunned really.

The Merriam Wesbster dictionary defines feminism as "the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes." That means feminists believe that women with equal experience who work the same job as a man should be paid the same. Feminists believe that both sexes have the right to run and hold political office. Feminists believe that the law should protect both men and women equally.

When we carefully read the New Testement, we see that Jesus was a feminist. He ministered to women in a time when they were excluded from religious life. Women were counted among his close associates and Jesus taught crowds of men and women and healed and performed miracles for women as readily as for men. In his day, this was pretty radical stuff.

If it didn't matter to Jesus, why does it matter to us?

Well...I'm a feminist and not scared or ashamed to say it! And I find many, MANY examples of extraordinary women in the lives of the saints that could be identified as feminist, beginning with Mary.

I think there is a current backlash about the term due to the overly brash elements in feminism that came to the fore in the 70's and 80's. I also believe that the feminist cause, in its drive to compete with men, has done a disservice to women still trying to live a "normal" life as wife and mother. I get looked at quite strangely when people learn that my job is raising and educating my children. And I've even been verbally attacked about it from total strangers in the grocery store.

In spite of that, however, I still identify with the feminist cause and think that no matter WHAT our life's work may be that it is just as valid and important as any man's and should be valued the same.
